Our Principles

At Roots & Wings, we believe in authentic and respectful connection for everyone. We believe these principles help us convey respect to our children.

Uninterrupted play
We trust that our children will play with the materials in the “right” way. We let our children initiate their play and have complete autonomy over what they do.

Communication
We trust that our children can understand and process language from day one, and we speak to our children before we do things that will affect or involve them.

Acknowledge emotions
We trust that our children are authentic in their expression of emotion. Small children have BIG feelings, and the best thing we can do is acknowledge and empathise, holding space for their expression.

No forced sharing
We trust that our children will learn to share in time, when it is developmentally appropriate. Learning to share authentically is so much more valuable.

Natural motor development
We trust that our children know their bodies and will sit/crawl/roll when they are ready. We don’t put our babies in positions they can’t get into themselves.

Value intrinsic motivation
We trust that if we free our children from the pressure of our approval, they will grow into self-motivated and confident people.

Curiosity
We trust that our children are good, even if the behaviour is not. We respond without judgement, and focus on being curious about the underlying need behind the behaviour.

Trust
We believe that trust is the key to unlocking a cooperative and connected relationship with our children.
